What if this doesn't work. This seems to get around the problem of being able to enter the file protocol but the aspx page that gets inserted into the document library is the same as the Link to Document content type. When we request this aspx page in the document library it basically displays a blank page and doesn't redirect.

Thank you, Dominick! I deleted all the USB drives from Device Manager, restarted the machine (IBM Thinkpad T400 in my case), installed the device driver software for my USB (TATA Photon from Huawei) and Viola! It connected.

None of the other suggestions (for example, those posted in http://www.frightanic.com/2009/06/16/huawei-e220-the-device-has-been-disconnected-or-is-unavailable/) worked for me.

Not sure why the 'The device has been disconnected or is unavailable
' error came up in the first place (as the USB worked when plugged onto another computer). Saved myself lots of time and further frustration. Thank you! :)

I discovered that the service ".NET Runtime Optimization Service v2.0.50727_X86" was disabled in my machine. When I set the startup option to manual, the problem went away.

Thought it would help someone...

I guess I spoke too soon. Restarting indexing service did help, but appears that I have to it every time! That's insane :-(

Thanks for the tip.

I had switched off the Indexing Service (set to manual startup). When I stumbled on this issue (only with VS2010 and not with VS2008), I started the indexing service and the problem went off.

Actually - the UPN doesn't work.

We tried installing sharepoint with AutoSInstaller using verylongaccountname@domain.com and even though you CAN REGISTER a new managed account in that format - whenever you want to use it for anything, sharepoint only understands sAMAccountName...

So stick with <20 characters for anything sharepoint'ish

Thanks for your post. I am stuck in same situation where I cant create a new web application in SSP (right after installation of MOSS 2007). I have tried numerous blog and web post but no resolution. So reading your blog I have a few questions. So you created new user accts called SharedServices1 and AppPool? When I created spSSPAdmPool user acct it appreared in SQL 2008 under Logins would deleting that acct cause further problems if I follow your resolution? By the way I running one SQL 2008 Sp1 or Sp2 and one Server 2008 R2. Thanks
